Gettin' Tipsy with: High Class Ice Cubes

October 6, 2017

Hey Gypsies, happy Friday! Anyone have big plans for the weekend? Perhaps hosting some people for a small get together or even a large fall party? I’ve got a simple trick for you to take your cocktails to the next level and wow all your guests.

Sometimes for large gatherings it can be hard to really elevate your cocktails because:

A- that requires a lot of time/effort at the party to craft create all of those cocktails without an on-staff bartender

B- to own nice glassware for the type of custom cocktail would be so expensive (and 99% of the time unnecessary) for anything more than a few friends.

SO here’s an easy solution to still have high-class impressive cocktails without breaking the bank on glassware OR sucking up all of your time at the party playing bartender (you should get to enjoy yourself too right??).

The first step in the right direction is to make a punch. Punch is a fantastic choice  for parties because you can make them fairly quick to make and then it’s beyond easy for people to get a refill when needed. It's also a way to treat your guests for only around $25. I have a ton of punch recipes but here is one I make that is always a crowd favorite!

1 Bottle Bacardi Tangerine Rum

1 Liter Squirt Grapefruit Soda

2/3 Bottle Simply Tropical Juice

This will fill a big punch bowl and (depending on how thirsty your guests are) serves 8-10. Feel free to message me if you’re looking for additional punch recipes!

Alright! So you’ve got your punch. And you’ve got glasses (make due with what you have or if you want to have all matching glasses for a lot of people check out what’s available at the dollar store!).

Now on to the fun part.

To up this drink in class and really make an impression simply step up your ice-cube game. It’s SO EASY. It does require some time and preparation but the actual act of doing it is very simple and will instantly bring your drink to the next level. And it's something you might never expect: ice cubes.

Ice cubes can be elevated with fruit, herbs, flowers or basically anything edible. Now you might be thinking - “Edible flowers?! That sounds so hard to find and so expensive!”  - but that’s a common misconception. You can buy a pack of roughly 75-100 BEAUTIFUL edible flowers on Amazon for $12. Easy? Yes they ship right to your door. Cheap? Relatively.

Fruit has endless possibilities and helps add color if you don’t want to go the flower route. Due to the fact it’s frozen it doesn’t really add flavor to the drink but is still an easy way to be fancyyy. Fruit also has lots of avenues you can go depending on what you’re looking for color-wise. Cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, kiwi, orange lime or lemon slices (peels on)… the list goes on and on. Adding certain herbs is a great way to get a rich green in there as well! Basil, rosemary, thyme, and mint are all popular herb flavors for drinks.

All you have to do is fill an ice tray, drop in your items, and freeze. That’s it! About a week before my event I’ll start cranking out ice cubes - once the tray has set I pop them out and just storing them in a bowl or back in my freezer. Then I refill the tray and keep that cycle going until I feel like I have plenty to spare!

Once you have a good stash of cubes then you can fill an ice bucket  to keep things cold and turn a boring ice bucket into a work of art. You can also throw some in the punch or a secondary ice bucket to allow guests to put into their drinks! Everyone with think you’ve really got it together and are the host(ess) with the most(ess). Or hey do it just for the heck of it to treat your fancy side!

Until next time gypsies,

Rach
